Our Training

The Howat Protocols of Cranio Fascial Dynamic (HPCFD) presents a detailed and informative series of modules on Cranio Fascial Dynamics (CFD) including the Howat 8 Step Protocol, written and delivered by Jonathan MP Howat.

Learn the Howat 8 Step Protocol Now

The Howat 8 Step Protocol was developed to assess and treat cranial distortion, dural membrane torque and its impact on cranial circulation. The end result being the effect on the role played by the entire cranio-spinal fascial system as dictated by the haemodynamic forces set in motion during the 32nd week of embryological development.

The Howat 8 Step Protocol, devised by Jonathan Howat, aims to reduce torque and re-establish a dural membrane system that supports and balances the brain and spinal cord.

CFD Course

The cranio-fascial influence on the entire body is huge and may have an effect on every aspect of the body’s physiology. The course consists of 8 modules covering all aspects of CFD and designed to include the major components that have a bearing on how cranio-fascial distortions occur and manifest.

Jonathan Howat designed and wrote the modules to create a balance of informative, theoretical elements and the all important hands on practical experience, essential for learning the protocol. As a result of the Covid pandemic and ‘restrictive’ gathering policy, HPCFD has made available, all the 8 modules and are now taught on-line to allow the ‘student’ to learn the theory at their leisure in the confines of their homes.

The important practical side of the course – module 8 – will be conducted on a ‘face to face’ basis to learn the clinical application of CFD, in a live, hands-on experience to ensure that every aspect of the stand-alone technique is mastered. The venues of these practical clinical seminars will be advertised on this site, with appropriate dates.

About Jonathan Howat Chiropractor Cranio Fascial Dynamics

The 7 on-line modules will be accompanied by supportive reference material that is necessary for the ‘student’. Each module has an on-line assessment component to be completed at the end of each module. On the successful completion of the on-line theory components for modules 1-7 and the clinical practical module 8, there will be eligibility for the final practical assessment and submission of clinic case studies.

The assessments are internally set and maybe externally verified to check for consistency of marking and thoroughness of each component.

On the successful outcome of all the final assessments, a final certificate of competency is awarded and a listing on the HPCFD Website as a registered CFD practitioner.

Modules, Dates, Fees & Registration

Modules

All equipment will be provided for Module 8 practical clinic sessions and the information delivered is supported by Jonathan Howat’s books to underpin each module; there are video clips to aid the practical work and excellent tutor support during the face-to-face session to ensure the learner’s needs are met.

Please find (below) an overview of each module and a detailed schedule and reading list for each day will be provided upon enrolment.

Theory

  • The anatomy and physiology of CFD.
  • History, vision and definition.
  • Embryogenesis, birth and skeletal changes.
  • Exploring the mechanical interrelationship between the: cranium, fascia, pelvis, vascular system, dental system and the brain.
  • How CFD will enhance your clinical adjustments.

Practical

  • Perform a Cranial Scanning – including assessing ascending and descending patient.
  • Assess CFD landmarks
Module 2

Cranial Anatomy and Physiology – this subject is not new to anyone in the healing arts professions, but covers the anatomy as a functional living cranium with the presence of fascial dynamics in the mix, showing the distortions and deformations that occur in CFD and their physiologic ramifications and corrections.

Theory

  • The anatomy of the cranial bones
  • The physiology of cranial pulses – both cardiac and respiratory
  • The impact on the cranium from cranio fascial dynamics
  • Dural membrane encapsulation
  • Cranial distortions from membrane dynamics
  • The intimate relations between the pelvis, vascular, dental and trauma

Practical

  • Cranial scanning of anatomical landmarks
  • Recognition of cranial distortions and patterns
  • Intra-oral anatomy, stomatognathics and TMJ
  • Physiologic cranial corrections with integrated handholds
Module 3

Cranio-Pelvic Dynamics – pelvic reciprocity with the cranium, spinal and cranial dural torque, sacro-iliac lesions and lumbo-sacral disc degeneration.

Theory

  • Mechanical interrelationship between CFD, the pelvis and pelvic instability.
  • Assessing how traumatic CFD torque effects pelvic stability.

Practical

  • Clinical diagnosis – plumb line, Muscle testing, blocking
  • Assessing three forms of pelvis instability
Module 4

Cranio-Vascular Dynamics – venous sinus congestion, CSF stagnation, ventricular system distortion and compromised brain drainage.

Theory

  • The mechanical interrelationship between CFD and blood flowing in, around and out of the brain – Irrigation system of the brain.
  • Understanding the Haemodynamic counter-clockwise motion.

Practical

  • Step 1 – 4 of the 8 step protocol – Venous Sinus Drainage (VSD) to include the preparation of:
    • cervical spine restoration and mobilisation
    • atlanto-occiput junction
    • temporal bones
    • occipital bone
    • sphenoid bone
  • Temporal clockwise de-torque
Module 5

Cranio-Dental Dynamics – the implications of malocclusion and Temporo-Mandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJD) that disturb cranio-fascial balance and sphenoid distortion

Theory

  • The mechanical interrelationship between CFD and the Stomatognathic system (occlusion, teeth, mouth, tongue and TMJ and the four pairs of mixed cranial nerves).
  • How CFD affects the occlusion resulting in mal-occlusion.
  • Identifying major and minor mal-occlusions.
